The Root Cause of unforgiveness

Have you ever had a small wound that you neglected to address and over time festered to become unbearable? And whenever someone moved close to it you’d move away so as to protect yourself and keep yourself from further pain?

I have. In fact just before embarking to write this, I had tiny bubble-like allergies on the inside of my left index and middle fingers that were caused by caustic dish washing paste.

It wasn’t until later however, that I realised the picture the Lord was trying to paint and the lesson that He was showing me through this experience.

You see these allergies started out pretty small so there was no point paying any attention to them…or so I thought. Before long these tiny bubble-like blisters festered up causing me much pain and discomfort.

I couldn’t focus at work and was also in a bad mood at home because of the pain and moved my hand away when anyone came close to touching it. For the slightest touch on this wound, which was now open with the raw flesh exposed, would send me squealing in pain. This of course was followed by anger at the person, or thing that interfered with my eroding fingers and at myself for being an idiot and neglecting to address the issue while it was still manageable. I was in silent agony with bitterness being all too obvious on my face which lacked the luster and smile that I normally wore.

By the time I addressed it, they were full blown sores and little boils that were oozing with puss and blood being released amidst the grinding of my teeth to swallow the pulsating pain whenever blood flowed into them.

The dressing however, gave it temporary relief but I couldn’t leave it on for too long as it felt like it was suffocating my fingers.

Through all this though the Lord painted a clear picture of the root of unforgiveness and how it affects our lives.

What did I need to learn and what was the Lord saying and showing me through this painful experience?

That the culprit, namely unforgiveness, begins as such.

A small wound when left unattended will fester to become unbearable and cause you much pain later on. And that pain will lead you to bitterness, which is cancerous to your soul and hazardous to your health. All because you allowed it to lay down roots in your heart and not deal with the issue while it was still small.

That wound may have begun as a tiny cut of words spoken at you in anger.

Or too many promises made that were broken.

Or your trust betrayed by those that should have had your best interest at heart.

Or being neglected as a child.

That wound may be the result of divorce, wondering who’s to blame as your picture of the fairy tale life ends up all tattered and torn.

Or growing up in a so called broken home, always comparing yourself to other children that had both parents around.

Or quarrels that were never settled because neither party was humble enough to apologize.

That wound may be unresolved sibling rivalry with the potential of leading to murder like Cain and Abel.

It may be the result of an innocent playful relationship followed by nine months of carrying an unexpected gift, all the while being angry at yourself for winding up in such a predicament.

It may be the result of abuse, be it sexual, physical or psychological.

Whatever the root cause of unforgiveness is, it will grow to become poisonous and land you in a prison of bitterness if you do not address it while the wound is still small.

I’ll be sharing more on the prison of bitterness later on.

Know today however, that the Lord wants to heal you, restore you and make you whole.

But in order for this to happen, you need to address the root cause of unforgiveness in your life. Mary Demuth in her book, Live Uncaged wrote

“In order to put your past to sleep, we must first face it.”

So will you face your past today by allowing the Lord to expose the root of those wounds in your heart?

Will you give Him access today to those areas in your heart that you’ve shut the door on because it was easier?

Will you allow Him to mend your broken heart like only He can?

Will you allow yourself to be vulnerable in His hands as the clay would a potter?

You may be wondering what gives me the right to talk about such an issue. Well, let’s just say I’ve been there and I know all too well the snare and the prison we can build for ourselves when we allow the culprit, unforgiveness, to roam free.

And just in case you think you’re exempt from dealing with this culprit, I’ll be sharing a list of self test questions to help expose some hidden issues of the heart, in the next chapter.

So unless you want to walk on in ignorance and not receive your healing to prepare yourself for all that God has in store for you, may I kindly suggest that you stay tuned.

Please feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions or would like to share your testimony.

God’s mandate of restoration for our island nation in 2014

The Lord has revealed his mandate, will and direction for our little island Nation of Fiji in 2014. If you’re wondering what’s in store for you this year or what is the Lord working to bring about in your life then let it be made known that 2014 is the year of Restoration for the children of God in this nation.

The word restoration means:

The action of returning something to a former owner, place, or condition. Meaning restitution, renovation, rehabilitation, rebuilding and renewal.

The Lord confirmed His word, which was finally released in our little church on the 19th, through a testimony by our senior Pastor’s wife about her father-in-law and what had happened during the week. He is an 81 year old man who had suffered a stroke and was laying on his death bed. The Lord however, brought about his healing as his family were relentless in prayer and praise and didn’t give in to their circumstances. The Lord restored the old man’s health and he woke his family up the next morning, speaking with clarity and walking normally about as he went and took off his diapers.

So, what do you need restored this year? Is it broken relationships? Is it family ties? Is it your health? Is it your wealth? Is it your marriage? Is it your home? Is it your job?

Whatever it may be, know today that the Lord is faithful to His word and your restoration will be complete when you heed it.

Also, with the Lord’s mandate for restoration comes an abundance of His grace to bring about reconciliation in your life.

Jesus said in Mathew 5:23-24

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.”

So in order to move forward this year, the Lord wants you to look back and address the issues that you’ve been running and hiding from. The issues that you so gladly sweep under the rug instead of dealing with head on.
The Lord wants you to:

  • Leave your gifts at the altar, return, and right your wrongs;
  • Address the secrets that you’ve been keeping in your heart and sweep over them no more;
  • Expose the deeds of the dark and have it brought out into the light;
  • Forgive those that have wronged you;
  • Ask for forgiveness from those you have wronged;
  • And forgive yourself.

The Lord is moving to bring about restoration in the areas of your life that need it. But you also need to play your part and take that step in answer to His word.

Know that restoration by the living God is always complete, not lacking anything and where the latter state of things will be more glorious than the former. Let’s look to Job 42:10 for confirmation –

10And the Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.

The year of restoration is upon us. A year to be made whole so that you and I receive all that the Lord has in store for us.

Let us allow the Lord to deal with our hearts and reveal the things in our lives that are still keeping us in bondage. Let us look back in humility with a willingness to learn and grow in the Lord so as not to deny ourselves the privilege of being restored by the living God.

This is the word of the Lord for the little island nation of Fiji.

He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

To God be the glory, now and forever.

Did you know that God doesn’t always listen to your prayers? And that sometimes your praying is a total waste of time?

Here are some scriptural references for confirmation if you’re a little skeptical.

In Jeremiah 7 the Lord is talking with Jeremiah the prophet saying he will not listen to any plea given up on behalf of the Israelites. Why? Because their wickedness was rife at the time and God had had enough of their disobedience and idol worship.

16“So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them; do not plead with me, for I will not listen to you. -Jeremiah 7:16

Another interesting occurrence that proves that your prayer can sometimes be in vain is found in Job 42:7-9

7 After the Lord had said these things to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends, because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has. 8So now take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and sacrifice a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.” 9So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite did what the Lord told them; and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.

This event not only proves that the Lord does not listen to our plea at times but also shows us the importance of praying for one another.

The three of them knew God. They heard his voice clearly. But God would not have listened to their prayer and would have dealt with them harshly as their deeds deserved if He were not a merciful God. In His mercy He sent them to a servant that He would listen to. One who was righteous in His sight. Hallelujah!!

I hope you now see why you and I need to continually pray for the lost in the world and those meddling with sin in the church. And how grateful we should be that Christ is making petition on our behalf, day and night. [Hebrews 7:25]

Glory be to the living God for His faithfulness!

“But we’re in the new testament now and our righteousness is through Christ”, you say.

Does this mean that God will always listen to our prayers and answer us?

Let me answer this by saying that our God is a God of principle and His nature and character does not change.

“I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.” – Malachi 3:6

So even though we have the privilege to go directly before God now, the effectiveness of our petition depends on us. The reason behind this is that there can be things in our lives that will prevent our prayers from being heard and hinder our requests from being answered.

While there are numerous hindrances to prayer, I’d like to talk to you about a specific hindrance that most people are either ignorant of or neglect to address in their lives.

This particular hindrance is a disease that is causing havoc in the lives of the children of God today and I hope to shed some light on it with revelation from the Spirit of God so that you address it, if need be, and grow to reach your full potential in Christ.

This sneaky culprit when left unchecked –

  • Will become a snare to you and stifle your growth in the Lord;
  • Will lead you to bitterness which is cancerous to your soul and hazardous to your health;
  • Will prevent God from hearing your prayers;
  • Will dull out the voice of the Spirit of God in your life thus preventing you from knowing the will of God;
  • Will cause all your offerings to be in vain;
  • And will prevent you from receiving the blessings that God has in store for you.

Now, wouldn’t you want to know the culprit that’s causing this much damage in your life and your walk with the Lord? Don’t you want to just hit him (if it were male) on the head with a spade or kick him in the nuts to render him totally useless? I know I would.

The good news is, you are about to learn who the culprit is and find out about the root cause and consequences associated with not apprehending him. You will also learn why you need to deal with it and how to weed it out completely from your life so that you receive your healing and be set free once and for all.

Who’s the culprit you ask?

Well, you’ll find out in the next chapter.

And trust me when I say the picture will become clearer as we go.

So stay tuned!

The Culprit that stifles your growth in the Lord

One of my favorite movies of all time is ‘A Knights Tale’, in which Heath Ledger plays the role of young William Thatcher; a peasant masquerading as a knight with the hope of changing his stars.

In one of the scenes William, who is in the stockade after being found out, is awarded with a knighthood by Edward, the Black Prince of Wales who states:

“He may be of humble origins. But my personal historians have discovered that he descends from an ancient royal line. This is my word. And as such is beyond contestation. Now, if I may repay the kindness you once showed me. Take a knee.”

Definitely one of my favorite movies! Anyway, let’s not digress too much. The relevance of this story will be discovered later. Now, where were we? Ah, yes! That blooming Culprit!

So who is this culprit that’s causing you to miss out on God’s fullness in your life and may have caused you to stumble one too many times?

Who is this culprit that leads you to bitterness which is cancerous to your soul and hazardous to your health?

Who is this culprit that stifles your growth in the Lord and causes your offerings to be in vain?

Who is this culprit that prevents God from hearing your prayers and you from knowing the will of God?

Who is this culprit that may have kept or may be keeping you in bondage?

The culprit is (drum roll please) ‘UNFORGIVENESS’. Yes!

Unforgiveness is a disease that needs to be treated, and quickly, if you are to reach your full potential in Christ.

The title of this study is – Don’t even bother praying if you haven’t done this! What do you need to do? Forgive. With such a bold statement for a title we need to go to the Word to clearly see the picture the Lord is painting for us. My thoughts on this matter don’t mean anything if they are not aligned with His Word.

Let us start with the Lord’s Prayer. There is a portion of the Lord’s Prayer that Jesus taught his disciples in – Mathew 6:12 that goes:

“Forgive us our sins as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us.”

The term forgiven here is a past participle. Which means it is something that you have already done. Completed. Finished.

But this verse in itself does not shed enough light as the Greek root word is the same for both forgive and forgiven. The word is aphiēmi [a-fe-a-me] and signifies to send away, set free and also to let alone.

So let us press on to get a clearer picture.

Know that whenever Jesus brought up forgiveness it was always in regards to prayer.

This is what He said after teaching His disciples how to pray in Mathew 6:14-15

14“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

I’d like to make it clear right now that forgiveness has nothing to do with your eternal salvation. In other words, you can’t forgive your way into heaven. If we could, we’d reduce God’s grace to works. And trying to be saved by works is tiring and a waste of time. But GRACE ROCKS! So let’s thank God for His grace!

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast.
-Ephesians 2:8-9

The benefits of forgiveness is for the here and now and this will become clearer as we go.

Know now that it is pointless to go before the Lord if you haven’t forgiven those who have wronged you. It renders your petition useless and denies you the right to be heard and the right to be answered.

For confirmation of this let’s look at what Jesus said in Mathew 5:23-24

23“Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

And in Mark 11:25

25“And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

And for the magnitude of forgiveness let’s look at what Jesus told Peter in Mathew 18:21-22

21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”

That’s an awful lot of times, don’t you think?

Note that these are the words of our King. And as such, is beyond contestation. Seeeeee…I told you the story had relevance. *High five!*

Now that you know who the culprit is, the next chapter will address the root of this disease. You can also look forward to learning the fruits and the consequences of unforgiveness and clearly see the web of deceit that this culprit weaves when left unchecked.

Praise God for the Spirit of Truth that brings revelation!

There’s so much more to come – Stay tuned!

A call for unity within the Church

Abba…Father! What more can we say? You are majestic beyond words Lord. You are our very breath. Our very life. Our very being. You are our sustainer. Our redeemer. The rock of our salvation. WHOAH!

Come, let us unite and worship the Lord while there is still breath in our lungs. Let us call out to Him day and night. Let us make a joyful sound to the Lord and dance before the Lord God almighty in awe of his wonder.

Let us bask in His presence so that we may radiate with His love.

Let us unite for the glory of the living God.

How good and pleasant it is
when God’s people live together in unity!
It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.
It is as if the dew of Hermon
were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,
even life forevermore.
-Psalm 133

Come forth Church! Come before the Lord in all humility and in love. Let the denominational barriers that keep us apart be shattered in the name of the Lord. Let our differences in doctrine and beliefs be broken once and for all.

What man will be able to argue his doctrines before this Holy God and be commended for it if it only brought about dissension. Who can counsel the Lord! Let us stop contaminating the things of such a magnificent God and learn His ways and His thoughts and come into His pattern of doing things.

A Father who is beyond words but never beyond reach.  A Father who is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, even when we feel like, and know we don’t deserve it.

If there be one thing that we can agree on, let it be that we are all sinners, once lost and now found. Saved only by grace, through faith in Christ Jesus not by works so no man can boast. Salvation has been freely given to each of us. Let us desecrate it no more and defame the name of the Lord no further.

Let us loosen the chains of oppression, repent and turn from the sinful desires in our hearts that keep us in bondage to a fading world and its systems.

Let us be the very fragrance of Christ to the poor and needy. To the orphans and widows. To the broken hearted and oppressed. To a lost and dying world.

Let them look upon us and see Christ in us…the hope of Glory!

Let us turn wholeheartedly toward this loving God who is slow to anger, abounding in loving kindness and He relents to send calamity upon his children.

Let us come together and glorify the Lord as one family.

Let us stand united! With one voice let us shout and glorify our God. With one voice, let us sing His praises. With one voice, let us sing the same song so the world may see us as He had willed.

His Church!

What are you willing to give up for the Lord?

Would you rather lose everything and remain in the presence and purpose of the Lord or hold on to some things and be out of the will of God?

A friend recently went through an ordeal. She had lost something valuable and it shook her faith a little. The questions below was part of her Facebook status.

“Now I ask you – what is the lesson you’re to learn? How does ones Faith in the Lord get back which was stolen? HOW? Can you tell me because I sure as heck don’t know ANYMORE?”

Too often when we lose something of value our first thought is – can I get this back? Can I continue believing in this God to return or replace what was lost or stolen? Should I continue this walk of faith or just hang it up? If he loved me at all, this wouldn’t have happened to me?

These questions are valid and are often asked out of pain, confusion and most times our unwillingness to see or hear what the Lord is trying to tell us. Why can’t we see or hear it? Simply because we choose not to. The answer sometimes may be right in front of us but we refuse to admit it.

Could it be that the Lord knows what’s good for us and what’s not?

Could it be that He has been trying to get our attention but we continue to walk on in ignorance?

Could it be that the only way to get our attention was to get rid of the distraction?

Could it be that we only listen and obey the Lord when it pleases us?

Could it be that we only follow after Him when it’s of benefit to us?

Could it be that He wants our whole heart and attention and not portions of it?

We seem to think that Jesus Christ is an ATM machine that we can go to only when we need to withdraw and then continue to please ourselves as we walk on in ignorance and disobedience.

The question to ask is not “Can the Lord replace or restore what was stolen?” But rather–

What are you willing to give up for the Lord?

What are you willing to lose?

How far are you willing to go for the Lord?

Are you willing to sever relationships for Him?

Are you willing to drop everything when He calls and walk in obedience even when you don’t understand or agree with it?

Are you willing to seek after His kingdom and His righteousness wholeheartedly and lay aside your immediate needs?

I have a big family and often pray for a suitable vehicle to cater for our traveling needs. This is what I would normally tell the Lord

“Lord, I need a big four wheel drive (SUV). I have a big family so it only makes sense that we get a big vehicle. I know that you can provide it for me and that you will. You said delight yourself in the Lord and you will give me the desires of my heart and this is a desire of my heart.

But Lord, if you know that I may become pompous and arrogant when I get it, then don’t give it to me.

If you know that I’ll drive around like a high shot showing off and enjoying the admiration from people, then please don’t give it me.

If you know that it will interfere with our relationship because my heart may become filled with pride and I may forget you, then I don’t want it. Give it someone else. Someone who needs it more than me.”

Jesus said in Luke 14:26-33 that we count the cost if we are to become His disciples.

25“Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:

26If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.

27And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

28Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?

29For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you,

30saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’

31Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?

32If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.

33In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.”

Again I ask –

What are you willing to give up for the Lord?

What’s taking His place in your life?

The Lord’s been calling you for some time now.

He’s been trying to get your attention amidst all the distractions in your life.

He longs for all of your heart and not fragments of it.

He wants to show you the wonders of His love on a whole new level.

He wants you to mature and walk in the full measure of Christ.

He wants you to discover and fulfill His calling in your life.

Will you repent today, ask Him to forgive you for pushing Him to the back seat and give Him your all?

The choice is yours.

I can only pray that you do.

Beware of healthy looking salads served by ravenous wolves

Be warned and beware of healthy looking salads that are presented so lavishly in all it’s bright colours, crispy and crunchy but are filled with poison. Beware of partaking in these healthy looking meals that are served in utter disobedience to satisfy the greed in the hearts of those serving them.

As I was enjoying my brunch this morning of last night’s leftover chicken stew, rice, and green salad which I had brought from work, I was interrupted by the Spirit of God who whispered, saying: “Don’t eat the salad.”

I love my salads. Especially when it’s this fresh, crispy and healthy looking. So when the Spirit of God spoke, it was easy to second guess Him or doubt his voice. After all, I thought to myself, this had only been in the fridge for two days and was still perfectly good. There was no way that God would deny me a perfectly healthy salad whose overall benefit for my body and health was very much needed. But as I continued to indulge the impression from the Holy Spirit became stronger –

“Don’t eat the salad.”

Now, only about a week ago I had brought some cold porridge out of the fridge to make use of. I am not one who likes to waste things so I thought I’d make use of the cold porridge even though it had been almost a week in the fridge. As I was serving it into the bowl, adding milk and sugar, the Spirit of God warned me not to eat it.

However, in my ignorance and trying not to be the wasteful type, I went ahead anyway. Why? Because It seemed like a good thing to do at the time. Well, to cut the long story short it left my wife and I bolting to the toilet with the ‘runs’. I asked the Lord to forgive me later for disobeying His warning.

So after the repeated impressions today of staying away from the healthy looking salad I decided to heed the voice of the Lord and took it off of my plate. It was then I realized what the Spirit of the Lord was saying as he brought about understanding.

It doesn’t matter whether I thought the salad was good or that it looked healthy and was good for me. It doesn’t matter my not wanting to waste food and thinking that I was doing a good thing. It doesn’t even matter how fresh and crispy it looked.

What matters is my obedience to the Lord’s commands and that I follow His instructions to the letter. Our ways are not His ways nor our thoughts His thoughts. Some things that we consider right or good are only so in the sight of men but do not glorify the Lord at all.

This is the picture that the Lord’s been painting and what He wants you(His Church) to know.

Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees was what Jesus warned His disciples. Those who clothe themselves as sheep but are ravenous wolves. Preying on the weak and leaving them more starved while they fatten themselves on the curd and the cream all in the name Lord.

Woe to you prophets and leaders who watch over the sheep of the Lord in dishonesty. Those called into the five fold as gifts to the church but are lording it over the sheep of God by satisfying the lusts in their hearts. Burdening them more instead of setting them free. The Lord cannot be mocked! A good thing, is not necessarily the right thing and some of the things you call right are not endorsed at all by the Lord.

Separate yourselves from such men who are filled with the poison of snakes and like a python they slowly constrict their prey till there is no life left in them. Come out and set yourselves apart! Do not partake of their disobedience.

“These men hide behind the pulpits and speak their own words. They fill the ears of my sheep with what they want them to hear and not what I intend for them to learn” says the Lord.

To you, the church of the living God, take up your positions and call out to the Lord. Yearn for more of Him today and he will honour that yearning and show up and reveal the secrets of His kingdom to you.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” -Jeremiah 29:13

Do not be fooled by ravenous wolves dressed as sheep who are out to make you more their slaves than a child of God.

“Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey; they shed blood and kill people to make unjust gain.” -Ezekiel 22:27

Who hide behind ministry but make a mockery of the name of the Lord. Their fruit will speak for itself and their deeds in the dark will be made known and brought out to the light.

“Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.” -Luke 12:1-3

Let those who need to repent, REPENT! And turn wholeheartedly toward the Lord and turn their backs on their deeds of darkness that strangle the children of God.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. -1 John 1:9

And to you, the child of the living God who has been yearning for more of the Lord. Who craves to experience Him in a whole new way. Who has been fed the salad of these preying wolves in your ignorance. Know today that His face is turned toward you. So press in and let the Spirit of Truth lead you to all truth.

He who has ears to hear, let him hear, what the Spirit of the Lord is saying to His church today!

May the name of the Lord be glorified now and for eternity.
